New Research: Myofascial Release Can Help Improve Knee Pain

May 4, 2017 8:01:00 AM by MTTI

Knee pain is one of the most common problems experienced by Americans. New massage therapy research indicates that massage therapy can improve outcomes for knee pain sufferers.

According to a 2012 Gallup-Healthways study, 26% of U.S. adults suffer from chronic knee-pain. Above the age of 50, that percentage rises to more than a third. However, recent research suggests that massage therapy, specifically the technique myofascial release, has positive outcomes for knee pain sufferers both in terms of pain management and the improvement of disability

Massage Therapy Supports Mobility

Mar 6, 2017 8:04:00 AM by MTTI
As a massage therapist, I've had clients with so many different jobs come into my office. One thing I can tell you is that no matter what you do for a living, everyone's job is hard on their body.

The CDC recommends that adults from ages 18 to 64 years old get at least 2.5 hours of moderate aerobic exercise per week. (Greater benefits can be gained by working out for longer or at a higher intensity and including strength training in your routine.) Sometimes it can feel overwhelming to fit even that amount of exercise into a busy schedule. But exercise is important because it means a break in your physical routine -- and so can massage.

Five Things I Love About Being a Massage Therapist

Feb 15, 2017 3:43:57 PM by MTTI

Becoming a massage therapist is one of the best decisions I ever made. There are lots of things I love about it, but here are my Top Five.

1. Making a Positive Difference

Before going to massage school, I worked at an office from nine-to-five. My job was to collect information about children’s summer camps. Although I knew that my work might be helping families somewhere down the line, mostly I just saw spreadsheets. As a massage therapist, I get to see the positive impact of my work every day. There’s nothing like seeing a client get off my table smiling and sparkly-eyed after a massage, saying, “I didn’t know my body could feel that good!” or “Wow, I can turn my head again!”

How Should I Accept Payments? (Starting Out Series for Massage Therapists)

Jan 24, 2017 8:00:00 AM by MTTI

When you start your own massage practice, there are important decisions to make about how you will run your business. One question many new therapists have is how to accept payment for their work.

Many massage therapists start out working at a franchise or spa and simply receiving a paycheck. However, even as an employee, you may want to see private clients occasionally. And especially if you run your own business, you need to decide what kinds of payments to accept from clients.

Kinesio Taping: Beyond the Sports Stadium

Jan 8, 2016 9:30:00 AM by MTTI

By MTTI Instructor Robin Faux

I’m sure you’ve seen it without knowing what you were looking at; a photo of an athlete celebrating a victory with a streak of black tape running along a muscle group. Maybe it was a series of hot pink strips stretched along the abs of a volleyball player. This tape, known as Kinesio Tape, has been around since 1979, but received a lot of attention during the 2008 Summer Olympics. Since the Beijing Olympics, many spectators have noticed the tape on their favorite athletes and it has appeared in a number of pictures worldwide. Because its most prevalent exposure is in sports photos, I believe many people think it’s exclusively useful for athletes. However, because of the wide variety of uses for kinesio tape, it is actually beneficial for people of all walks of life.
