American College of Physicians Recommends Massage for Low Back Pain

Apr 12, 2017 8:00:00 AM by MTTI
Low back pain a problem? Doctors now say: Before you reach for the Advil, consider massage therapy. Back pain is one of the most common injuries suffered by Americans. Sometimes referred to as " throwing your back out," an acute but temporary flare-up of pain in the low back is the second most common neurological ailment and the most common cause of job-related disability. Historically, doctors have recommended that patients take over-the-counter (and sometimes prescription) pain medication to treat this condition. However, new guidelines from the American College of Physicians encourage back pain sufferers to try complementary and alternative medicine including yoga, acupuncture, and massage therapy to reduce their pain.

Try Giving It Away (Starting Out Series for Massage Therapists)

Apr 8, 2017 9:00:00 AM by MTTI
Every successful full-time massage therapist I've met has one thing in common: They all started their careers by giving some massage away.  It may sound counter-intuitive but giving away free massage can be one of the most effective ways to build your business . Of course, as massage therapists, we all need to eat; it's important to know what your boundaries are in terms of how much pro-bono massage you can afford to do. But especially for the new therapist who doesn't yet have an established client base, donating your time and skills to members of your community can be a great way to get hands-on practice and get some great reviews circulating in your name.

Tax Deduction Tips for Massage Therapists

Apr 2, 2017 9:00:00 AM by MTTI
It's tax time! Make sure you're taking the appropriate deductions for your massage therapy business.

If you’re a self-employed massage therapist, you work hard to run your business and you want to be making the most out of it. It's important to keep good records of all of your massages -- including when, where, and how much you were paid. This makes it easy to report your income at tax time and gives you the documents you need in the unfortunate case of an audit. However, in addition to tracking your income, it's equally important to keep track of your expenses. These expenses can be considered deductions and will lower the amount of income tax you are responsible to pay.

How Much Should a New Massage Therapist Charge? (Starting Out Series for Massage Therapists)

Mar 28, 2017 9:00:00 AM by MTTI
Setting your rates can feel intimidating as a new massage practice, but it doesn’t have to be complicated.

Not long ago, I was having coffee with an old friend who happens to be a veteran massage therapist. We were chatting about my new massage practice and his transition into the next stage of his career: combining massage therapy with acupuncture. “So, how much are you charging for a session?” he asked. I paused for a second, thought about it, and then shrugged and said, “Well, it depends.”  My friend laughed, “Ha ha, I know how that goes! I’ve been doing massage for more than ten years and my answer is still ‘well, it depends.”

Massage Therapy Supports Mobility

Mar 6, 2017 8:04:00 AM by MTTI
As a massage therapist, I've had clients with so many different jobs come into my office. One thing I can tell you is that no matter what you do for a living, everyone's job is hard on their body.

The CDC recommends that adults from ages 18 to 64 years old get at least 2.5 hours of moderate aerobic exercise per week. (Greater benefits can be gained by working out for longer or at a higher intensity and including strength training in your routine.) Sometimes it can feel overwhelming to fit even that amount of exercise into a busy schedule. But exercise is important because it means a break in your physical routine -- and so can massage.

How Should I Accept Payments? (Starting Out Series for Massage Therapists)

Jan 24, 2017 8:00:00 AM by MTTI

When you start your own massage practice, there are important decisions to make about how you will run your business. One question many new therapists have is how to accept payment for their work.

Many massage therapists start out working at a franchise or spa and simply receiving a paycheck. However, even as an employee, you may want to see private clients occasionally. And especially if you run your own business, you need to decide what kinds of payments to accept from clients.
