Massage therapy is a growing career field because it offers virtually limitless opportunities, and therapists are rewarded by doing something they truly love. Therapy is beneficial for the clients you will take care of in many ways, mentally, physically and spiritually, but the same can certainly be said for the therapist.
Pursuing your own career in massage therapy will allow you to work closely with clients on their own paths to wellness, and at the same time keep you physically healthy by keeping your muscles working, mentally healthy by learning and adapting your skills as a therapist, and spiritually healthy by building those connections with the people you work with.
If you’ve decided to go on this path, there are two basic steps you will need to follow to sign up for a career as a massage therapist:
The first thing you will need to do is complete a training program. This program should be at an accredited massage therapy school, like MTTI. The education and hands-on trainingyou receive in the program will prepare and qualify you to practice as a therapist. You can start by searching for a school near you, or in your desired location. Then, think about what modalities you’d like to initially focus on in your career to help guide your decision to find the best fit for your needs.
2. Meet State Requirements
Once you’ve completed your training you will need to meet a certain set of requirements in order to practice massage therapy. These requirements will be regulated either by the state or a municipality and will likely require that you obtain a license or the equivalent. This typically involves passing the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Exam (MBLEx), so be sure to select a massage therapy training school that can properly prepare you to successfully complete this examination.
The Road to Massage Therapy
Massage therapy training is typically shorter in duration than acquiring a degree, so you can anticipate achieving your goals within a year or two. To sign up for a career as a massage therapist, start by finding the best school that will prepare you for a long and successful journey. Then, be sure to get the licensing you need based on requirements in the area you want to practice. Once you’ve completed these steps, you’ll be ready to begin a successful business as a massage therapist.
