How Much Should a New Massage Therapist Charge? (Starting Out Series for Massage Therapists)

Mar 28, 2017 9:00:00 AM by MTTI
Setting your rates can feel intimidating as a new massage practice, but it doesn’t have to be complicated.

Not long ago, I was having coffee with an old friend who happens to be a veteran massage therapist. We were chatting about my new massage practice and his transition into the next stage of his career: combining massage therapy with acupuncture. “So, how much are you charging for a session?” he asked. I paused for a second, thought about it, and then shrugged and said, “Well, it depends.”  My friend laughed, “Ha ha, I know how that goes! I’ve been doing massage for more than ten years and my answer is still ‘well, it depends.”

Massage Therapy Supports Mobility

Mar 6, 2017 8:04:00 AM by MTTI
As a massage therapist, I've had clients with so many different jobs come into my office. One thing I can tell you is that no matter what you do for a living, everyone's job is hard on their body.

The CDC recommends that adults from ages 18 to 64 years old get at least 2.5 hours of moderate aerobic exercise per week. (Greater benefits can be gained by working out for longer or at a higher intensity and including strength training in your routine.) Sometimes it can feel overwhelming to fit even that amount of exercise into a busy schedule. But exercise is important because it means a break in your physical routine -- and so can massage.

Five Things I Love About Being a Massage Therapist

Feb 15, 2017 3:43:57 PM by MTTI

Becoming a massage therapist is one of the best decisions I ever made. There are lots of things I love about it, but here are my Top Five.

1. Making a Positive Difference

Before going to massage school, I worked at an office from nine-to-five. My job was to collect information about children’s summer camps. Although I knew that my work might be helping families somewhere down the line, mostly I just saw spreadsheets. As a massage therapist, I get to see the positive impact of my work every day. There’s nothing like seeing a client get off my table smiling and sparkly-eyed after a massage, saying, “I didn’t know my body could feel that good!” or “Wow, I can turn my head again!”

How Should I Accept Payments? (Starting Out Series for Massage Therapists)

Jan 24, 2017 8:00:00 AM by MTTI

When you start your own massage practice, there are important decisions to make about how you will run your business. One question many new therapists have is how to accept payment for their work.

Many massage therapists start out working at a franchise or spa and simply receiving a paycheck. However, even as an employee, you may want to see private clients occasionally. And especially if you run your own business, you need to decide what kinds of payments to accept from clients.

The Time Box

"Don't worry. Stay present with your client.  You have all the time in the world."

When I first started massage school, learning to give a full-body massage felt like a daunting task.  There were so many muscles to memorize, not to mention their attachment sites, actions, and relationships to each other. Agonists? Antagonists? This was the most science I had done since high school!
